Set up a service on your phone, allow the overlay and audio capture, then start subtitles. Move the overlay vertically, or tap it to adjust text size and enter Immersive Mode.

How to get started.

For your first setup, we recommend Volcano Engine, Alibaba Cloud or Google Gemini.

Get a Google Gemini API key in Google AI Studio. Gemini has a free tier, so you can try it for free within its limits.

Install Mimi

Choose the official package for your operating system.

Connect a service

Add credentials for a cloud service, or choose Apple local services on a supported Mac. Languages and fees vary by service.

Choose audio. Start subtitles.

System audio is on by default. On desktop, choose your microphone or both sources. macOS and Windows 11 also let you select an app’s audio.

Choose your subtitle service.

No Mimi account needed. Cloud recognition receives audio, and remote text translation receives recognized text. Apple Speech and Apple Translation process locally on your Mac.

Keys stay on your device. Subtitle saving and recording are off by default. Turn them on to save and export.

Use a third-party service.

On Android, Alibaba Cloud, OpenAI, Gemini and xAI accept an address, model and API key from a third-party provider.

For example, when selecting OpenAI, use an address that supports OpenAI’s live audio API. A text chat API alone will not work.

Download the language packs to recognize speech and translate it locally on your Mac. No API key needed.

Apple service setup guide

  1. Recognize audio

    Turn off subtitles. Add Apple Speech in Settings → Speech & Translation, choose a language and download its pack.

  2. Translate text

    Choose Apple Translation under Text Translation and save. Pick your source and target languages, follow the download prompts, then turn subtitles on when ready.
